Wessex Funeral Services Awarded Southampton Public Health Act Funerals Contract

Southampton City Council has awarded a contract to Wessex Funeral Services Limited for the provision of Public Health Act Funeral Services, covering cases where the authority is required to arrange a funeral under Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984.

The contract is valued at £125,000 excluding VAT (£150,000 including VAT) and is expected to run from 14 August 2026 until 31 July 2029. The agreement includes options to extend for up to two additional years, through two one-year extensions, potentially taking the contract through to 31 July 2031.

The procurement was conducted as a below-threshold open competition. Two tenders were received and both progressed to the final assessment stage. Both bids were submitted by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with Wessex Funeral Services Limited selected as the successful provider.

Under the contract, Wessex Funeral Services will deliver funeral services on behalf of Southampton City Council where the authority has a statutory responsibility to arrange a funeral under the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984.
