Wakefield Council Awards Bereavement Services Administration System Contract

Wakefield Council has awarded a contract for a new bereavement services administration system to support the management of its crematoria, cemeteries and memorial services across the district.

The contract has been awarded to GSS (NI) Ltd following an open procurement process and is valued at £527,266 including VAT.

Wakefield Council operates two crematoria, located in Wakefield and Pontefract, and manages 19 cemeteries across the district. The service currently handles approximately 3,500 cremations and 850 burials each year, including both full burials and cremated remains interments.

The new system will support the electronic booking of cremations and burials, including online booking facilities for funeral directors. It will also help the council fulfil its legal obligations to maintain electronic burial and cremation registers.

In addition, the system will support memorial sales and the inspection, testing and record management of memorials located across the council’s cemeteries, helping ensure they are maintained in a safe condition.

The contract includes an implementation period ahead of the planned go-live date and will run for an initial five-year term from 29 May 2027 until 29 May 2032.

The council has the option to extend the contract for up to a further five years through a series of extension periods comprising two years, a further two years and a final one-year extension, potentially taking the agreement through to 29 May 2037.
