South East pharmacies expand NHS contraception services to improve access for women

Community pharmacies across the South East have expanded the NHS services available on the high street, giving women faster and more convenient access to contraception without relying solely on traditional GP appointments.

The expansion allows more women to access contraception support directly through participating community pharmacies, strengthening the role of pharmacists in providing routine healthcare within local communities. The approach is intended to make services easier to access while offering patients greater choice over where they receive care.

Community pharmacies are often located in town centres, high streets and residential areas, making them a convenient option for people who may otherwise need to arrange an appointment with their GP practice. Providing contraception through pharmacies can also offer greater flexibility for women balancing work, caring responsibilities and other commitments.

The move forms part of a wider NHS effort to make greater use of community pharmacy services and provide patients with appropriate care closer to home. Expanding the range of services pharmacists can deliver can help reduce demand elsewhere in the health system, particularly within general practice.

Improved access to contraception is also an important part of preventative healthcare. Making it easier for women to obtain advice and ongoing contraception can reduce barriers to care and allow patients to speak with trained healthcare professionals in a familiar community setting.

The expansion across the South East reflects the growing role of community pharmacies within NHS primary care. Alongside dispensing medicines, pharmacies are increasingly being used as accessible healthcare settings where patients can receive advice, treatment and support without needing to attend a GP practice or hospital.
