Cancer patients have ranked Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust among the best-performing trusts in the country for cancer care, as its dedicated Macmillan support service marks a successful first year supporting more than 700 people.
The positive patient feedback highlights the experiences of people receiving cancer treatment and support through the trust, with patients recognising the quality of care provided across its cancer services. Patient experience is an important measure of cancer care, reflecting not only clinical treatment but also the communication, information and support people receive throughout diagnosis and treatment.
The recognition comes as Northumbria Healthcare marks the first anniversary of its dedicated Macmillan support service. During its first year, the service has supported more than 700 people affected by cancer, providing additional help to patients as they navigate the practical and emotional challenges that can accompany a diagnosis.
Cancer support services can play an important role alongside clinical treatment, helping patients and their families access information and guidance while ensuring they know where to turn when they need additional assistance. The partnership with Macmillan is designed to provide this wider support throughout people’s cancer journeys.
The strong patient rankings provide further recognition for teams working across Northumbria Healthcare’s cancer services and come at a time when improving cancer outcomes and patient experience remains a major priority across the NHS.
For patients, however, the findings provide an important insight into how care is experienced by those actually using the service. Alongside clinical outcomes, feeling informed, listened to and supported can make a significant difference during what is often one of the most difficult periods in a person’s life.
