New Urgent Treatment Centre to Change Emergency Care Access at North Middlesex Hospital

A new urgent treatment centre is due to open at North Middlesex University Hospital in November, bringing significant changes to the way adults access urgent and emergency care in north London.

Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the development on 28 October. Adults arriving at the hospital on foot will enter through the new centre, where they will receive an initial assessment before being directed to the most appropriate clinical team. Children will continue to use the existing paediatric emergency department entrance.

The redevelopment will create additional waiting and assessment areas, dedicated reception facilities and more space for ambulance handovers. The emergency department’s ambulance handover capacity will increase by 58%, with additional trolley and chair bays intended to help crews transfer patients more efficiently.

Hospital leaders hope the revised assessment model and expanded facilities will improve patient flow and reduce avoidable delays. Opening ahead of the winter period, the centre will provide additional capacity as emergency services prepare for the seasonal rise in demand.
