Two more NHS employees have been suspended amid an investigation into suspected unauthorised access to the medical records of people affected by the Southport attack.
The suspensions are understood to form part of a wider examination of whether confidential patient information was viewed without a legitimate clinical or professional reason. No conclusion of wrongdoing has been reached, and suspension does not establish that the allegations are proven.
NHS staff may only access medical records when there is a genuine reason connected to their role or the care being provided. Electronic systems retain records showing who has opened a patient’s file, allowing unusual or potentially inappropriate access to be identified and investigated.
The case has renewed concerns about “snooping” following serious or widely reported incidents. NHS organisations have been under growing pressure to strengthen monitoring, restrict unnecessary access and take prompt action where staff are suspected of breaching patient confidentiality.
