The government has abandoned plans to abolish Healthwatch following criticism that removing the patient watchdog could weaken the public’s influence over health and social care services.
Healthwatch gathers people’s experiences of NHS and social care provision, raises concerns with decision-makers and helps patients understand where they can obtain support. Its local organisations also visit services, speak directly with communities and identify problems that may not be visible through formal performance data.
The proposed abolition had prompted concern among patient groups and sector leaders, who warned that transferring its responsibilities elsewhere could reduce independence and make it harder for people, particularly those from seldom-heard communities—to challenge poor care.
The reversal means a dedicated patient voice will remain within the system, although further details are expected about Healthwatch’s future structure, funding and relationship with the wider NHS. Supporters say retaining the name alone will not be enough unless local organisations have the resources and independence required to scrutinise services effectively.
