Woodside Place nursing home in Telford, Shropshire, has received an overall outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its first inspection since registering with the regulator.

The home, operated by Woodside Place Health Care Limited and part of Exemplar Health Care, provides nursing care and support for up to 33 people. Eleven people were living at the service during the August and September inspection.

CQC rated the home outstanding for caring, responsiveness and leadership, while safety and effectiveness were rated good.

Inspectors found that staff placed strong emphasis on helping residents make their own choices, develop independence and achieve personal goals.

According to CQC, staff supported people to build confidence and develop everyday skills, including learning to cook, using public transport independently and planning holidays. The home also adapted activities and support to ensure people with complex needs or communication difficulties could participate in community life.

One resident was supported to take their first independent trip into the community after losing confidence in going out alone, while another was preparing for a holiday to Disneyland with staff assistance.

CQC deputy director of adult social care in the West Midlands, Amanda Lyndon, said the inspection highlighted the home’s person-centred approach and the commitment of staff to helping residents achieve goals that mattered to them.

She also recognised the positive relationships between staff, residents and families, alongside a leadership culture in which people felt listened to and valued.

Inspectors found that leaders encouraged staff to raise concerns and ensured issues were addressed promptly. The home also maintained close working relationships with families and healthcare professionals, with communication described positively during the inspection.

CQC noted that this partnership approach helped maintain joined-up care and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.

The service also used monthly audits and electronic monitoring to oversee residents’ care and identify changes in their health promptly. Staff regularly reviewed individual progress to ensure people continued working towards their personal goals.

The findings highlight Woodside Place’s focus on independence, meaningful activities and personalised support, contributing to its outstanding ratings in three key areas during its first CQC inspection.
