Be Ready When the Luck Happens – Ina Garten

Some people seem to glide through life as though everything has simply fallen into place. Then you read their story and realise just how much courage, hard work and determination it actually took. That’s exactly how I felt reading Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten.

I’d always admired Ina for her calm, effortless style and incredible career, but this memoir showed me something much deeper. Behind the beautiful recipes, television programmes and successful business is a woman who was prepared to take risks, work incredibly hard and keep learning throughout her life.

The title of the book couldn’t be more fitting. One of Ina’s central messages is that luck isn’t simply about being in the right place at the right time. Opportunities come to everyone, but whether we can take advantage of them often depends on how well prepared we are when they arrive.

That really resonated with me. Throughout the book, Ina reflects on leaving the security of a government job to buy a small speciality food store, despite having very little experience in the industry. From there, she built what would become one of the most recognisable food and lifestyle brands in the world. Reading her story reminds you that successful careers are rarely built on certainty, they’re built on curiosity, resilience and the willingness to take calculated risks.

What I loved most about this memoir was how honest it feels. Ina doesn’t present success as something that happened overnight. She writes openly about the challenges, the self-doubt, the hard work and the lessons she learned along the way. She also shares the story of her relationship with her husband, Jeffrey, with warmth and honesty, reminding readers that behind every successful career is a real life filled with both joyful and difficult moments.

For leaders, there are so many lessons hidden throughout these pages. Preparation matters. Relationships matter. Reputation matters. And perhaps most importantly, success isn’t about waiting for the perfect opportunity, it’s about being ready when that opportunity eventually arrives.

I think that’s a particularly powerful message for health and social care leaders. Many people in our sector spend years quietly building knowledge, experience and resilience without fully appreciating just how much they’re learning. Every difficult conversation, every inspection, every challenge overcome and every person supported is preparing you for whatever comes next. Sometimes we underestimate just how ready we already are.

The book also speaks to leader wellbeing. Ina’s story isn’t about chasing success at any cost. It’s about building a life that reflects your values, surrounding yourself with people who support you and finding fulfilment in work you genuinely enjoy. In a world that often celebrates being busy, there’s something refreshing about her thoughtful, grounded approach to both work and life.

When I finished this book, I didn’t simply close the cover and move on. It challenged me to think differently about my own future and reminded me that opportunities don’t appear out of nowhere, they’re built through years of preparation. In many ways, this book gave me the confidence to stop waiting for the “right time” and finally start The Daily Round. Looking back, it was one of the catalysts that turned an idea into reality.

Editor’s Rating: ★★★★★

Who should read it? Leaders, entrepreneurs, anyone considering a career change, and anyone who enjoys memoirs that are as inspiring as they are honest.

Why it’s in the Leadership Library: Because the opportunities that change our lives rarely arrive with warning, and when they do, preparation is often what turns luck into success.
