RCT Council to Directly Award Residential Short Breaks Contract for Disabled Children

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council intends to directly award a contract for residential short breaks for children and young people with a permanent and/or substantial disability.

The service will provide specialist, regulated respite care for families supported by the Disabled Children’s Team, including planned residential short breaks and emergency placements where required.

The contract is expected to run from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2029, with 2+2+2-year extension options potentially taking the agreement to 30 September 2035.

The Council has withheld both the intended provider’s identity and the contract value, stating that these will be published in the subsequent UK6 notice.

The direct award follows a market engagement exercise which, according to the Council, did not identify any alternative providers able or willing to deliver the full scope of the service.
