The NHS is urging people who are eligible for a flu vaccination to come forward for their jab ahead of the winter season, as health services prepare for the annual increase in respiratory illnesses.
Flu can cause serious illness, particularly among older people, those with certain long-term health conditions and other groups considered at greater risk of complications. Vaccination remains one of the main measures used by the NHS to reduce the impact of the virus, both for individuals and on health and care services during the busiest months of the year.
Each winter, flu contributes to additional pressure across GP practices, community services and hospitals, with some patients requiring hospital treatment after developing complications. Health officials are therefore encouraging those who are offered an NHS flu vaccination to take up the opportunity rather than waiting until flu begins circulating more widely.
The vaccination programme is targeted at groups considered most vulnerable to serious illness from flu, alongside other eligible groups identified as part of the national programme. The NHS also uses the seasonal campaign to help protect wider communities by reducing the number of people becoming seriously unwell and requiring healthcare treatment.
Winter remains one of the most challenging periods for the health service, when seasonal respiratory viruses can coincide with increased demand across urgent and emergency care. Higher levels of flu can also affect the health and social care workforce, adding further pressure through staff sickness at a time when services are already experiencing increased demand.
People who are eligible will be able to access their vaccination through participating NHS services, including GP practices and pharmacies, depending on local arrangements. Those invited for a vaccination are being encouraged to book when appointments become available and ensure they are protected ahead of the main winter flu season.
