It’s a question most leaders don’t ask often enough. Not because they don’t care, but because they’re busy. Focused on:
But beneath all of that, there’s a question worth pausing for, if your team described your leadership style… what would they say?
Most leaders have good intentions. They want to be supportive, fair, clear and consistent. And often they believe they are. But leadership isn’t defined by intention. It’s defined by experience. How your team feels to be led by you.
Your team doesn’t see your workload, your pressure or everything you’re balancing. They experience:
Day in, day out.
There’s often a gap between, the leader you think you are and the leader your team experiences, and that gap matters. Because your team will always respond to, what they experience — not what you intend.
They might describe your leadership as:
Supportive – “I feel backed. I know where I stand.”
Clear – “I understand what’s expected of me.”
Consistent – “I know what I’ll get — day to day.”
Or…
Reactive – “It depends on the day.”
Distant – “I don’t really see them.”
Unclear – “I’m not always sure what’s expected.”
And often, they won’t tell you directly. But they will show you:
Leadership is not built in big moments. It’s built in:
These moments create your leadership style.
You don’t need a formal review to understand this. Ask yourself:
The answers tell you more than any report.
You can’t control how every moment lands. But you can control:
And over time, that shapes everything.
Instead of asking – “Am I doing a good job?”
Ask – “What does it feel like to be led by me?”
That question changes your focus. From tasks to people.
Leadership isn’t what you say it is. It’s what your team would say it is, and that doesn’t mean you need to be perfect. It means you need to be aware, because at the end of the day the way you lead shapes the way your service runs.
Leadership doesn’t improve by accident. It improves with clarity, reflection, and support. We’ve put together a practical guide for Registered Managers:
