“Outstanding.” It’s the word many services aim for. It appears in strategy plans, team meetings and inspection goals. It represents quality, consistency and excellence. But there’s a truth that often gets overlooked: You can’t build an outstanding service on an exhausted team.
On paper, it’s clear.
Everything working together.
In reality, many teams are:
And still expected to deliver “outstanding.”
There’s a gap between the standards expected and the capacity available, and that gap matters. Because over time pressure replaces performance.
It’s not always obvious. It shows up as:
Not because people don’t care, but because they’re tired.
Care is demanding. Your team is:
And when staffing is tight, that pressure increases.
As a leader, you’re balancing:
And sometimes, survival becomes the priority. But here’s the risk:
If exhaustion becomes normal, standards start to slip.
Strong leaders understand this; performance is directly linked to how people feel. You can have the right systems, the right processes and the right policies, but if your team is exhausted none of it holds consistently.
When teams are constantly pushed:
And the service becomes reactive. Not because of capability, but because of capacity.
Support isn’t just saying “thank you” and being approachable. It’s about:
Before it becomes burnout.
Instead of asking, “why aren’t we performing at the level we want?” Ask “what state is our team in right now?” Because tired teams don’t perform consistently, supported teams do.
Outstanding services are not built on:
They are built on:
Your team is at the centre of everything.
All of it flows through them. So, if you want to build an outstanding service, start by asking “are we asking too much from people who are already running on empty?” Because the truth is you can’t build something exceptional on a foundation that’s exhausted.
Supporting your team isn’t separate from performance. It is performance. We’ve put together a practical guide for Registered Managers:
