There’s a question most care leaders don’t stop to ask. Not because they don’t want to, because they don’t have time. But it’s an important one, are you leading your team — or just managing problems?
In care, your day rarely starts with strategy. It starts with:
And from that moment on, you’re reacting.
Over time, something changes. You stop planning, developing and leading proactively. And start fixing, responding and managing what’s in front of you, not because you want to, because you have to.
Problem-solving is part of the role, but when it becomes the majority of your day, leadership gets squeezed out. You find yourself:
And at the end of the day? You’ve been busy but not necessarily moving anything forward.
Managing problems is about:
Leading is about:
Both matter, but they are not the same.
Care is unpredictable. Things go wrong, people need support and decisions can’t wait. So naturally problem-solving takes priority. But over time, this creates a pattern, the service becomes dependent on you reacting.
When you’re always managing problems:
Because everything flows back to you.
If you stepped back for a moment, would your service still run effectively? Or would:
Your answer tells you where you are.
Leadership doesn’t mean stepping away from problems. It means reducing how many problems exist in the first place.
Your team knows:
Your team can:
Without everything coming back to you.
Not just reacting when something goes wrong, but creating consistency so things go right more often.
You won’t eliminate problems. This is care, but you can change your role in them.
From:
The person who fixes everything
To:
The person who builds a service that works without constant fixing
You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight.
Start by asking – “Is this something I should solve — or something I should teach?” That one question shifts you back into leadership.
Being busy doesn’t always mean you’re leading. It can mean you’re holding things together, but leadership is what builds something that holds itself.
So, the next time your day fills up with problems, pause for a moment and ask: “Am I just managing this — or am I leading something better?”
