Hospitals across Venezuela continue to face immense pressure after two powerful earthquakes struck the country’s north-central region on 24 June, leaving thousands dead, many more injured and causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and healthcare facilities. The disaster has prompted a major international humanitarian response as medical teams work around the clock to care for survivors.

The back-to-back earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused extensive destruction in several states, with La Guaira among the worst affected areas. According to the Pan American Health Organization, multiple health facilities have been damaged, while others remain operational but are struggling with overcrowding, disrupted services and growing surgical backlogs as casualty numbers continue to rise.

Healthcare professionals have been working in exceptionally challenging conditions, treating traumatic injuries while also maintaining essential services for patients with ongoing medical needs. Emergency medical teams, search and rescue specialists and humanitarian organisations from around the world have joined local responders, delivering medical supplies, establishing temporary treatment facilities and supporting communities displaced by the disaster.

As recovery efforts continue, public health experts are also warning of secondary health risks. Damage to water, sanitation and healthcare infrastructure can increase the likelihood of infectious diseases, while thousands of displaced people require ongoing access to healthcare, medicines and mental health support. International agencies have launched emergency appeals to help restore essential health services and protect vulnerable communities during the recovery phase.

Why This Matters

Natural disasters place extraordinary demands on healthcare systems, requiring rapid coordination between emergency medicine, hospitals, public health agencies and humanitarian organisations. The response in Venezuela highlights the resilience and dedication of healthcare professionals who continue caring for patients despite damaged facilities, limited resources and extremely difficult working conditions.

For UK health and social care professionals, the disaster is a powerful reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness, business continuity planning and international collaboration. Whether responding to natural disasters, major incidents or public health emergencies, the ability of healthcare systems to adapt quickly and continue delivering safe care remains one of the most important measures of resilience.
