York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has applied to NHS England for £8 million in cash support as it struggles with a growing financial deficit and an ambitious savings programme.
The trust reported an adjusted deficit of £18.4 million halfway through the financial year, leaving it approximately £9.2 million behind its planned position. It is forecasting a year-end deficit of £30.5 million under its mid-range scenario, which could rise to £45.5 million if financial pressures worsen.
Around £24.7 million of the planned £31.8 million in savings had been delivered during the first six months. If that performance continued, the trust would achieve approximately £35 million against its full-year target of £66 million. Although enough potential savings schemes have now been identified, around £8 million of those plans are considered high risk.
The trust is awaiting NHS England’s decision on the cash-support application submitted earlier this year. Leaders are focusing on reducing temporary medical staffing costs and securing savings across individual care groups, with the coming months expected to determine whether the organisation can prevent its deficit deteriorating further.
