Delayed discharges are costing Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust an estimated £21.5 million annually, as patients remain in hospital despite being clinically ready to leave.
At the end of August, 68 adult patients were occupying beds without a continuing clinical need for inpatient treatment. This represented approximately 18% of the trust’s acute bed capacity, limiting the space available for people requiring admission to mental health or learning disability services.
The trust said delays in securing suitable external care placements were among the main causes. Patients may be unable to leave because appropriate supported accommodation, residential care or community support is unavailable, even when hospital treatment is no longer necessary.
TEWV has described the issue as a major performance, quality and financial risk. It plans to strengthen community services and has developed an outline proposal for a crisis assessment centre in Durham, intended to support people earlier and reduce avoidable pressure on acute wards.
The problem reflects a much wider divide between hospital and community care. Delayed discharges cost the NHS in England an estimated £2.7 billion during 2025/26, with stretched social care and community-service capacity repeatedly preventing patients from moving into more appropriate support.
