World Pharmacists Day 2026 to celebrate the profession’s role in healthier communities

Pharmacists across the world will be recognised for their contribution to patient care and public health as World Pharmacists Day takes place on 25 September 2026.

Organised by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the annual awareness day celebrates the pharmacy profession and highlights the crucial role pharmacists play in building healthier communities.

Across the UK, pharmacists are an increasingly important part of frontline healthcare, working across community pharmacies, hospitals, GP practices, care settings, research and the pharmaceutical industry.

Their role extends far beyond dispensing medicines. Pharmacists provide clinical advice, support people to manage long-term conditions, help ensure medicines are used safely and effectively, deliver vaccinations and provide an increasingly wide range of services designed to help people access healthcare closer to home.

The profession also has a particularly important role as health systems look for ways to improve access to care and relieve pressure elsewhere.

In England, initiatives including Pharmacy First have expanded the role of community pharmacy, enabling pharmacists to provide advice and treatment for a range of common conditions and allowing some patients to receive support without first needing a GP appointment.

For the social care sector, pharmacists also provide valuable expertise around medicines management. People receiving care may be taking multiple medications, making accurate administration, regular reviews and effective communication between pharmacies, GPs, care providers and families essential to patient safety.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working alongside care services can help identify potential medication problems, support safe systems and ensure people understand the medicines they are taking and why.

World Pharmacists Day also provides an opportunity to recognise the people behind the profession. Like many parts of the health service, pharmacy teams continue to work in demanding environments while responding to changing patient needs and taking on new responsibilities.

For health and care organisations, 25 September is an opportunity to recognise pharmacy colleagues and partnerships and celebrate the expertise they bring to multidisciplinary care.

Ultimately, World Pharmacists Day is a reminder that pharmacists are not simply the people behind the pharmacy counter. They are an integral part of the modern health and care workforce and increasingly central to how communities access safe, effective and convenient healthcare.
