Small Steps for Better Wellbeing

Practical tips, guidance, and inspiration to support your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing every day.

The Joy of Having Something That’s Just for You

When was the last time you did something purely because you enjoyed it?

Not because it was productive. Not because it helped somebody else. Not because it moved a project forward or ticked something off a list. Just because you wanted to.

For many people working across health and social care, this question can be surprisingly difficult to answer.

Life becomes full of responsibilities. Work commitments. Family obligations. Caring for others. Supporting colleagues. Managing endless to-do lists.

Over time, it can feel as though every hour belongs to someone or something else. Which is why having something that’s just for you matters more than we often realise.

More Than a Hobby

When we talk about wellbeing, hobbies are sometimes treated as an optional extra. Something to do if there’s time left over. But the things we do purely for enjoyment often serve a much deeper purpose.

They remind us who we are outside of our roles. Outside of work. Outside of responsibilities. Outside of the expectations placed upon us.

Whether it’s painting, fishing, reading, cycling, knitting, photography, baking, or growing vegetables in the garden, these activities allow us to reconnect with ourselves.

Not who we need to be for others. Who we are.

The Part of Life That Doesn’t Need a Purpose

Much of modern life is focused on outcomes. What are you achieving? What are you working towards? What are you improving? Even our leisure time can start to feel productive.

We track our steps. Measure our progress. Set goals for our hobbies. But there is something refreshing about doing something that serves no purpose beyond enjoyment.

No targets. No expectations. No performance. Just pleasure.

Why We Often Let These Things Slip Away

The activities we enjoy are often the first things to disappear when life becomes busy.

Not because they aren’t important. Because they don’t feel urgent.

A painting can wait. The book can wait. The gardening can wait. The guitar can wait. And so, we tell ourselves we’ll get back to it when life settles down.

The problem is that life rarely settles down completely. There is always another responsibility waiting around the corner.

A Reminder That You Matter Too

One of the hidden benefits of having something that’s just for you is the message it sends.

It says: My wellbeing matters. My interests matter. My enjoyment matters. Not in a selfish way. In a healthy way.

Because people are more than their responsibilities. More than their job title. More than the care they provide to others.

The Happiness of Being Fully Absorbed

Think about the last time you lost track of time doing something you genuinely enjoyed.

Perhaps you were reading. Walking. Cooking. Creating. Listening to music. For a while, your attention wasn’t on work, worries, or tomorrow’s challenges.

You were simply present.

Moments like these are increasingly rare in a world filled with distractions. And perhaps that’s why they feel so valuable.

Finding Your Way Back

If you’re struggling to think of something that’s just for you, you’re not alone. Many people lose touch with hobbies and interests over time.

The good news is that they can be rediscovered. Think back to what you enjoyed before life became quite so busy. What made you curious? What helped you relax? What made you lose track of time? The answer might still be waiting for you.

The Reality Behind Wellbeing

Across health and social care, there are people giving enormous amounts of themselves every day.

People supporting others through challenges, uncertainty, illness, and change.

That work matters. But so do the people doing it.

And perhaps one of the simplest acts of self-care is making room for something that belongs entirely to you. Not because it’s useful. Not because it’s productive. But because it brings you joy. And sometimes, that’s reason enough.
