Norfolk healthcare community mourns GP as husband faces murder charge

The death of a Norfolk GP has left colleagues, patients and the wider community in shock as her husband appeared in court charged with her murder.

Dr Hannah Cain, who was known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, was found unresponsive at her home in Fern Hill, Dersingham, during the early hours of Sunday. Paramedics attended, but the 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Dr Terry worked at Grimston Medical Centre, which temporarily closed following her death because of what it described as difficult circumstances.

Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after being charged with murder by Norfolk Police. He spoke only to confirm his personal details, was not asked to enter a plea and was remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at King’s Lynn Crown Court on Thursday. The charge remains an allegation and criminal proceedings are continuing.

Beyond the court process, this is an extraordinarily sad time for the local healthcare community. A GP is often woven into the life of the place they serve, supporting patients through illness, bereavement, birth and recovery over many years. Dr Terry’s sudden death will therefore be felt not only by those closest to her, but also by colleagues and patients who knew her through her work.

Specialist police officers are supporting her family, who have requested privacy. As the investigation continues, the focus of the healthcare community will be on remembering a doctor whose life has ended in deeply distressing circumstances and supporting those affected by her loss.
