NHS leaders welcome £1.5bn funding to improve hospital buildings

NHS leaders have welcomed the allocation of £1.5bn to tackle safety issues and improve buildings across the health service.

The funding forms part of the government’s £6.75bn NHS Estate Safety Fund, which is intended to address some of the most urgent infrastructure problems across the NHS estate.

The £1.5bn allocation will support work to improve the safety and condition of NHS buildings, with health leaders saying investment in ageing infrastructure is essential for both patients and staff.

Many NHS organisations are dealing with significant maintenance backlogs, including problems with roofs, electrical systems, heating, ventilation, water systems and other critical infrastructure.

NHS Providers welcomed the investment but said sustained capital funding would be needed to address the scale of the challenge facing trusts.
