Clear, concise updates on the regulations, legislation, and decisions shaping the care sector.
NHS England has updated the codes used for the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) within the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).
A new version of the MHSDS Enhanced Technical Output Specification, ETOS v6.0.7.1, has been published following an amendment to WSAS within the Mental Health Assessment Scales section.
Previous WSAS assessment scales included SNOMED codes specific to Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT). These have now been replaced with generic SNOMED codes.
Providers that submitted WSAS IAPT SNOMED codes as part of their April or May 2026 MHSDS submissions do not need to take any action, and the data will continue to be included in analysis.
However, all resubmissions and submissions covering June 2026 onwards should use the updated WSAS codes.
The MHSDS collects patient-level information from people in contact with mental health, learning disability and autism services and is used for purposes including commissioning, service planning, research, national reporting and performance monitoring.
Providers can access the latest ETOS and updated assessment scale information through NHS England’s MHSDS implementation tools and guidance.
