Newcastle is to lead a national programme supporting the safe and effective expansion of robotic surgery after its Surgical Training Centre received £7.4 million in funding.
The investment will establish the National Surgical Robotic Adoption Hub, known as SHARP, which will help NHS organisations assess, introduce and use robotic technology. The centre will provide training, testing and evidence-based guidance rather than focusing on a single manufacturer or surgical system.
Robotic systems allow surgeons to control highly precise instruments during minimally invasive procedures. Their use can support smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery, although the technology requires substantial investment, specialist training and changes to established clinical pathways.
The Newcastle hub is expected to examine how robotic surgery can be adopted consistently and safely across different NHS services. It will also help organisations evaluate whether particular technologies offer clinical and operational benefits before making major purchasing decisions.
Newcastle is one of eight Robotics Adoption Hubs being created through a wider £40 million government-backed programme covering sectors including healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture and waste management. The national network is intended to turn emerging robotics research into practical services, improved productivity and wider access to new technology.
