Two London NHS brain tumour services have received national recognition for the quality of their treatment, patient care and research.
The neuro-oncology network run by University College London Hospitals and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, together with services at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, have been designated Tessa Jowell Centres of Excellence for Adults.
They were among six UK neuro-oncology centres receiving the status following an expert-led assessment covering clinical care, patients’ quality of life, research opportunities and access to clinical trials. Feedback from people receiving treatment also formed part of the review.
Assessors highlighted the UCLH and Mount Vernon network’s advanced imaging, chemotherapy and radiotherapy services, neurological support, psychological care and extensive research programme. The Barking, Havering and Redbridge service was recognised following a two-year review of its care, treatment and research.
The six newly designated services join 14 existing centres, meaning around two-thirds of the UK population now live within the catchment area of a recognised Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for adult brain tumour care.
