Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan is to receive £4.7 million to relocate and improve its same-day emergency care service.
The new facilities will be positioned closer to A&E and diagnostic services, allowing suitable patients to be assessed, diagnosed and treated more efficiently. Where clinically appropriate, they will then be able to return home without being admitted overnight.
The investment is intended to improve patient flow, reduce avoidable hospital admissions and free beds for people requiring inpatient treatment. It should also help emergency teams manage demand during periods of intense pressure.
Wigan’s allocation forms part of almost £140 million announced for 14 urgent care projects across England, including new treatment centres, ambulance capacity and emergency department upgrades. The government has presented the programme as part of its preparations for winter, although a completion date for the Wigan development has not been confirmed.
