Avon Reach, a nursing home for older people in Christchurch, Dorset, has been rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection in August 2026.

The home, run by Colten Care (1993) Limited, received outstanding ratings for effectiveness, caring and leadership, while its safety and responsiveness were rated good. The inspection was carried out to assess whether the service’s previous overall rating of good remained accurate.

CQC found that staff supported residents to maintain their independence, pursue personal interests and remain connected to their communities. One resident who had moved into the home unable to walk regained sufficient strength and confidence to walk 200 metres unaided, enabling them to rejoin friends and family for meals and outings.

Inspectors also found that staff helped residents manage risks while remaining active. The home worked closely with healthcare professionals to support mobility and reduce the risk of falls, while links with local schools, charities and community groups provided opportunities for social engagement.

The CQC highlighted improvements to the home’s cleaning arrangements, with a new water-based system reducing residents’ exposure to chemical cleaning products and lowering the risk of slips from wet floors.

Healthcare professionals gave positive feedback about the service, praising its standards and communication. Inspectors also noted that residents and their families received relevant information and regular updates through newsletters.
