Senior clinicians have called for round-the-clock emergency care to remain central to plans for two new hospitals in Norfolk.
The warning relates to the proposed replacements for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn and James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston. Both ageing sites are being rebuilt through the government’s New Hospital Programme.
Doctors advising the programme reportedly said the new hospitals must retain 24-hour emergency departments alongside the services needed to support urgent treatment. Their intervention follows concern about how care could be organised across Norfolk and Waveney as plans develop.
The Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group has said the two projects will be developed together, but decisions about their future clinical services have not yet been finalised. Construction company Skanska has been appointed as the delivery partner for both schemes.
