Strong public support for St Mary’s Hospital redevelopment

Plans for a new St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington have received strong public backing as the redevelopment prepares to enter its next consultation phase.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said 92% of respondents who answered a question about the overall masterplan supported its vision for the site. The second phase of consultation, held during June and July, received 207 survey responses alongside feedback from exhibitions, workshops, webinars and engagement with patients, staff and community groups.

Support was largely driven by the need to replace the hospital’s ageing and fragmented buildings with modern facilities capable of meeting future healthcare demands.

Respondents said the new hospital should be easy to access and navigate, with step-free routes, clear entrances, effective signs and suitable drop-off points. There was also support for green and quiet spaces and for recognising St Mary’s history and contribution to medical research.

However, concerns were raised about the proposed buildings’ height and scale, construction disruption, traffic, parking and the potential effect on local residents.

A third phase of consultation is due to begin on September 30, giving patients, staff and residents another opportunity to comment as the designs develop. The trust is working towards an accelerated delivery date of 2036 for the new hospital.
