Every care provider wants to deliver outstanding care. But outstanding care begins long before someone walks through the front door on their first shift.
It begins at the interview. Recruiting the right people isn’t simply about filling vacancies. It’s about finding individuals who share your organisation’s values, communicate with compassion, work safely and genuinely want to make a difference in people’s lives.
Skills can often be taught. Values are much harder to train.
Interviews shouldn’t feel like an interrogation. Nor should they become a checklist of qualifications and previous job titles. Instead, they should help you understand who the person is behind the CV.
Most importantly…
That simple question often changes the way we assess candidates.
Staff turnover remains one of the biggest challenges facing health and social care. Replacing employees is expensive, disruptive and can have a significant impact on continuity of care for the people you support. While no interview can guarantee someone will stay, asking the right questions can help identify candidates whose values, motivations and expectations genuinely align with your organisation.
Exploring topics such as teamwork, resilience, communication and career aspirations often provides a much clearer picture than focusing solely on previous experience.
A candidate may have years of experience. Another may have none. Experience certainly has value, but it doesn’t always predict future performance.
Some of the best carers are remembered not because they knew every policy on day one, but because they were kind, reliable, willing to learn and genuinely cared about the people they supported.
During interviews, look for examples rather than opinions. Instead of asking:
“Are you a good team player?”
Ask:
“Can you tell me about a time you supported a colleague during a difficult shift?”
Real-life examples often reveal far more than hypothetical answers.
Every organisation has its own recruitment process, but there are several themes worth discussing with every candidate. These include:
Together, these topics help build a more rounded picture of the individual sitting in front of you.
One of the biggest challenges during recruitment is ensuring every candidate is assessed fairly. When different interviewers ask different questions or score responses differently, comparisons become difficult.
Using a structured interview template encourages consistency across every interview, helping organisations make fairer, more objective recruitment decisions while ensuring key areas aren’t overlooked. It also creates a useful record that can support recruitment decisions and future discussions.
To help support safer, more consistent recruitment, we’ve created a free Daily Round Carer Interview Questions Template.
Designed specifically for health and social care employers, the template includes questions covering:
There’s also space to record key observations, rate responses, identify strengths, note any concerns and capture your overall recommendation. Whether you’re recruiting your first care worker or your hundredth, a structured interview can help ensure every candidate is given the same opportunity to demonstrate their values, experience and potential.
Every interview is about more than filling a vacancy. It’s about finding someone who will become part of your team, earn the trust of the people you support and contribute positively to your organisation’s culture. The right appointment can improve continuity of care, strengthen teamwork, boost staff morale and help reduce costly staff turnover. Taking the time to ask thoughtful, consistent questions isn’t just good recruitment practice. It’s an investment in safer care, happier teams and better outcomes for everyone.
