Small Steps for Better Wellbeing

Practical tips, guidance, and inspiration to support your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing every day.

Why Having Something to Look Forward To Is Good for Your Wellbeing

When life is busy, it’s easy to become focused on getting through.

Getting through the shift. Getting through the week. Getting through the never-ending list of responsibilities that seem to refill as quickly as they are completed.

For many people working across health and social care, this can become a familiar rhythm. Days are structured around supporting others, meeting deadlines, solving problems, and responding to whatever the day brings.

And before long, life can start to feel like a series of things that need doing. Which is why having something to look forward to matters more than we often realise.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Big

When people hear the phrase “something to look forward to,” they often think of holidays, celebrations, or major life events. But anticipation doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful.

Sometimes it’s a coffee with a friend next weekend. A walk along the coast. An evening without plans. A favourite television programme. A meal with family. A day off that’s been marked in the diary for weeks.

Small things count. In fact, sometimes they matter most.

The Power of Anticipation

There is something uplifting about knowing that a positive moment is ahead. It gives us a focal point beyond today’s challenges. A reminder that life is not only made up of responsibilities. A reason to lift our eyes beyond the immediate pressures of the moment.

When days feel demanding, even a small event on the horizon can provide a sense of balance. Not because it removes the difficulties. But because it reminds us there is more to life than them.

Why We Often Stop Planning Things

Interestingly, many people stop creating things to look forward to when life becomes busiest. Not intentionally. It simply slips down the priority list.

Schedules become crowded. Energy feels limited. The focus shifts to managing what is urgent rather than creating space for what is enjoyable.

Over time, this can leave people feeling as though they are constantly working towards the next obligation rather than the next moment of joy.

Giving Yourself Permission

For some people, particularly those in caring roles, there can even be a sense of guilt attached to planning enjoyable things.

A feeling that there are more important matters demanding attention. More productive ways to spend time. More responsibilities waiting to be met. But wellbeing isn’t something that happens once every task is completed. Because in reality, there will always be another task. Another responsibility. Another demand on your time.

Joy cannot always wait until everything else is finished.

The Importance of Looking Beyond Today

One of the reasons difficult periods can feel overwhelming is that our focus narrows.

We become consumed by the immediate challenge. The immediate pressure. The immediate concern. Having something to look forward to gently widens that perspective. It reminds us that today’s circumstances are not the whole story. That there are future moments waiting for us. Experiences we haven’t had yet. Conversations we haven’t enjoyed yet. Memories we haven’t made yet.

Creating Small Pockets of Anticipation

The good news is that anticipation can be created intentionally. Not through expensive plans or elaborate arrangements. But through simple choices. Booking lunch with a friend. Planning a family day out. Setting aside time for a hobby. Putting a walk in the diary. Choosing something enjoyable and giving it a place in your future.

Sometimes the act of planning is almost as valuable as the event itself.

The Reality Behind a Well-Lived Life

When people reflect on meaningful lives, they rarely talk only about work completed or tasks achieved. They remember experiences. Connections. Celebrations. Moments of laughter. Things they looked forward to and enjoyed.

Across health and social care, there are extraordinary people giving so much of themselves to others every day. They deserve moments of anticipation too. Moments that belong solely to them. Because wellbeing isn’t just about coping with today. It’s also about having reasons to feel excited about tomorrow.
