Two universities have suspended medical student placements at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn following concerns about the learning environment.
The decision affects students from the Universities of Cambridge and East Anglia. Both institutions have paused undergraduate medical placements while alternative arrangements are made for affected students.
According to the universities, the decision was taken because of concerns about the quality of the educational environment rather than patient safety. The hospital will continue to host postgraduate doctors in training while work is undertaken to address the issues raised.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust acknowledged that its university partners had “lost confidence in parts of the learning environment” for undergraduate students. The trust said it is working closely with both universities to understand the concerns and implement improvements to restore placements as soon as possible.
Hospital leaders said they remain committed to providing high-quality education alongside patient care and are developing an action plan with the universities to improve the student experience.
Medical student placements are a key part of NHS workforce development, providing supervised clinical experience before graduation. Universities regularly review placement providers to ensure students receive appropriate teaching, supervision and support.
At present, the suspension applies to undergraduate medical student placements only, with no indication that clinical services at the hospital have been affected.
