Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to introduce measures aimed at easing the cost of living in his first speech outside 10 Downing Street after taking office.

Speaking following his appointment by King Charles III, Burnham said the government would begin announcing measures from Tuesday to provide what he described as “some breathing space” for households facing ongoing financial pressures.

He said details of the package, including how it would be funded, would be published alongside the announcements.

Alongside the immediate measures, the Prime Minister confirmed plans to publish a wider 10-year strategy for the UK later this year. He said the plan would focus on long-term reform across several areas, including the economy, education, mental health and housing.

Burnham also said his government would remain committed to existing fiscal rules while pursuing investment and public service reform.

No specific cost of living measures have yet been announced, and further details are expected from the government on Tuesday.

The announcement is likely to be of interest to health and social care professionals, many of whom continue to experience financial pressures linked to rising household costs. Recent NHS staff surveys have identified financial wellbeing as an ongoing concern for parts of the workforce.

The Daily Round will provide further coverage once the government publishes the full package of cost of living measures.
