Point of Care Testing (POCT) for North Northamptonshire’s NHS Health Checks Service

North Northamptonshire Council is seeking a provider for a Point of Care Testing (POCT) solution to support delivery of its NHS Health Checks programme from 1 April 2027.

The contract, valued at an estimated £442,588.80, will cover the supply and ongoing management of POCT equipment used by trained NHS Health Checks providers to obtain cholesterol and HbA1c results during appointments.

The testing approach enables results to be available during the health check, supporting immediate risk assessment, discussion with patients and appropriate follow-up where required.

Service Requirements

The successful provider will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive POCT solution covering:

• POCT analysers
• Consumables
• Maintenance
• Repair and replacement arrangements
• Quality assurance
• Training
• Technical support
• Account management

The Council has reviewed its existing screening-based POCT approach and confirmed that the model remains clinically appropriate and proportionate for the NHS Health Checks pathway.

The current contract expires on 31 March 2027, with the replacement arrangement expected to begin immediately afterwards.

Equipment and Contract Management

North Northamptonshire Council has identified the ageing analyser estate as an important consideration for the new procurement, with a significant proportion of existing devices expected to require replacement during the contract period.

The Council has also identified contract management concerns relating to asset tracking and oversight of external quality control.

The new arrangement is therefore intended to provide a more comprehensive POCT contract, with clearer management of equipment and services while strengthening quality assurance, lifecycle management and Council oversight.
