Breastfeeding Support Service

Wirral Council is inviting tenders for the delivery of a Breastfeeding Support Service designed to provide evidence-based support for women who choose to breastfeed before and after birth. The service aims to improve breastfeeding rates across the borough, with additional support targeted towards women experiencing the greatest health inequalities.

The commissioned service will deliver a combination of education, promotion and practical support to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for mothers and babies across Wirral.

Service Overview

The service will provide an evidence-based programme of breastfeeding education, promotion and support for antenatal and postnatal women. Support will be targeted towards vulnerable women and those living in the most disadvantaged wards where breastfeeding rates are lowest.

The service will include, but is not limited to:

• Face-to-face support
• Group support sessions
• Peer support within Family Hubs and Children’s Centres
• Telephone support
• Provision of resources, information and advice
• A strong social media presence to encourage, motivate and provide personalised support for breastfeeding mothers

The overall aim is to improve breastfeeding rates and support positive health outcomes for mothers and babies across Wirral.

The procurement is being undertaken as a below threshold open competition under the Light Touch Regime.
