Hospitals across the North East and North Cumbria experienced their busiest June on record for emergency department attendances, according to the latest NHS performance data.
A total of 106,667 people attended accident and emergency departments across the region during June 2026, reflecting continued high demand for urgent and emergency care services.
The regional figures mirror the national picture, with NHS England reporting more than 2.43 million A&E attendances across England during June – the highest number ever recorded for the month.
The latest statistics highlight the sustained pressure facing emergency departments throughout the year, with high levels of demand no longer confined to the winter period.
NHS performance data also showed that emergency departments continued to manage significant volumes of patients requiring urgent assessment and treatment as services prepared for further seasonal pressures later in the year.
