NHS Urges Eligible Young People to Take Up New MenB Vaccination Offer

The NHS is encouraging eligible young people in England to take advantage of a new, time-limited vaccination programme designed to help protect against meningococcal group B (MenB) disease ahead of the new academic year.

The programme is aimed at:

• Current Year 13 students (generally aged 17–18).
• People under the age of 25 who are starting university as an undergraduate for the first time in autumn 2026.
• Some people under 25 moving into residential further education accommodation for the first time.

Appointments will be available through participating community pharmacies from 20 July 2026, with eligible individuals requiring two doses of the vaccine for optimal protection.

Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Although uncommon, the illness can develop rapidly and become life-threatening, making early prevention and recognition particularly important.

The temporary vaccination programme follows recent meningococcal disease outbreaks and has been introduced while the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) continues to review the wider evidence for future vaccination policy.

It is important to note that this programme is separate from the routine MenACWY vaccination, which continues to be offered through the NHS to protect against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. The MenB vaccine protects against a different strain of the bacteria and is being offered to specific eligible groups as part of this temporary programme.

For healthcare professionals, education providers and families, the announcement serves as a reminder of the importance of vaccination in helping to prevent serious infectious diseases, particularly as thousands of young people prepare to begin university and other residential education settings where close social contact can increase the risk of transmission.
