NHS Expands AI-Powered Clinical Note Technology to Reduce Administrative Burden

The NHS is expanding the use of Ambient Voice Technology (AVT) across England as part of its wider digital transformation programme, with the aim of reducing administrative workload and allowing clinicians to spend more time with patients.

Ambient Voice Technology uses artificial intelligence to listen to conversations between clinicians and patients during consultations. The technology can generate draft clinical notes, letters and other documentation, which are then reviewed, edited where necessary and approved by the clinician before being added to the patient’s health record.

NHS England recently announced that the Midlands has become the first region to procure Ambient Voice Technology at scale, making the technology available to all 1,239 GP practices and more than 70,000 clinicians across 15 acute and community trusts. The initiative forms part of a broader NHS programme to modernise clinical documentation and improve productivity across healthcare services.

NHS England has also published national guidance to support the safe adoption of AI-enabled ambient scribing products. The guidance states that organisations introducing the technology should ensure appropriate clinical governance, patient transparency, data protection and information security arrangements are in place. Importantly, clinicians remain responsible for checking, correcting where necessary and approving all documentation generated by AI before it becomes part of the patient’s record.

Recognising the rapid expansion of Ambient Voice Technology, NHS England and the Royal College of Psychiatrists are also developing additional guidance specifically for mental health, learning disability and neurodivergent services, with publication expected later this year.

Supporters of the technology believe it has the potential to reduce time spent on administrative tasks and improve clinical workflows. However, NHS England emphasises that organisations adopting AI tools must continue to meet clinical safety standards, maintain patient confidentiality and ensure robust oversight of AI-generated documentation.
