Is being liked important as a leader?

Most leaders want to be respected, but many also want to be liked. The challenge is that the two don’t always go hand in hand.

Leadership often means making difficult decisions, having honest conversations and putting the needs of the team or organisation ahead of being popular. At the same time, the best leaders are often approachable, fair and compassionate, qualities that naturally earn the respect and admiration of those around them.

So, where do you draw the line?

Do you think it’s important for leaders to be liked, or is earning respect what really matters?
