A children’s home in Huyton has maintained its Good Ofsted judgements after inspectors found children were happy, well supported and making positive progress.

Inspectors assessed children’s overall experiences and progress, how effectively they were helped and protected, and the quality of leadership and management at the home. All three areas were judged to be good.

Ofsted found children were living in a warm and caring environment where staff had developed positive relationships with them and understood their individual needs. Staff were described as engaging warmly with children, helping to strengthen relationships and positively influence behaviour.

Children were also supported to maintain relationships with people who were important to them, helping preserve their sense of identity and belonging. Opportunities to enjoy everyday childhood experiences included board games, cinema visits and trips to the beach.

Developing independence was another strength identified during the inspection. Rather than expecting children to progress at the same pace, staff supported them to develop skills according to their individual circumstances, encouraging them to try new experiences and take appropriate risks as their confidence increased.

This approach had helped some children learn to travel independently, while one young person had successfully progressed from the home into independent living.

Inspectors found staff had a good understanding of each child’s needs and knew what action was required to keep them safe. The home was led by an experienced and knowledgeable manager supported by a stable and committed staff team.

External professionals were also positive about the service, highlighting the nurturing support children received from staff.

Councillor Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said the inspection reflected the dedication and professionalism of the team and highlighted the progress children were making in developing their confidence and skills.

He also said the latest findings mean all children’s homes in Knowsley are currently judged to be Good, describing this as a significant achievement.

For the children living at the Huyton home, the inspection highlights the importance of providing more than simply a safe place to live. Maintaining important relationships, experiencing ordinary activities and being given the time and support to develop independence can all help young people prepare for life beyond residential care while still having the security of a nurturing home around them.
