Thousands of healthcare leaders, researchers, investors and technology experts have gathered in Hong Kong to examine how breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and medical research can be moved more quickly from laboratories into clinical care.
The 2026 Global Health Summit was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 7 and 8 August, bringing together more than 3,000 participants and almost 200 speakers from across healthcare, science, technology and investment.
Jointly hosted by New Frontier Group and the Hong Kong Investment Corporation Limited, the two-day summit focused heavily on the challenge of translating scientific and technological discoveries into treatments and healthcare tools that can be used in the real world.
Held under the theme “EXPONENTIAL: From Breakthrough Discoveries to Global Impact”, discussions covered artificial intelligence development, frontier medical research, clinical translation, investment and the infrastructure needed to take healthcare innovations from early research through to patients.
Artificial intelligence featured prominently, reflecting its rapidly expanding role across healthcare. Technologies using AI are increasingly being explored in areas ranging from diagnostics and medical imaging to drug development, clinical decision-making and the management of healthcare services.
However, developing a promising technology is only one part of bringing it into healthcare. New innovations must also navigate clinical testing, regulation, funding, manufacturing and adoption by health systems before they can routinely reach patients.
The summit sought to bring together different parts of that process, including scientists responsible for developing new technologies, clinicians capable of evaluating their potential in healthcare settings and investors able to provide the capital required to develop and scale new products.
Clinical translation was consequently one of the central themes of the event, with discussions examining how promising discoveries can move beyond laboratories and research programmes and become technologies capable of delivering measurable benefits to patients.
Investment was another major focus. Healthcare technologies can require substantial amounts of capital and lengthy development periods before reaching widespread clinical use, particularly when products need extensive clinical evidence and regulatory approval.
The involvement of investors alongside healthcare leaders and researchers reflects a wider effort to connect scientific innovation with the financial support required to bring new treatments and technologies to market.
Hong Kong Investment Corporation chief executive Clara Chan said the summit brought together healthcare innovators from around the world, with the event intended to encourage collaboration between people working across different areas of the industry.
The location of the summit also reflects Hong Kong’s ambition to strengthen its position within the international life sciences and healthcare innovation sector. Organisers have highlighted the city’s clinical infrastructure, international financial system and links with mainland China as potential advantages for companies seeking to develop and commercialise healthcare technologies.
The event comes as healthcare systems around the world continue to explore how artificial intelligence can be introduced safely and effectively into clinical environments.
While the potential applications are considerable, moving AI from experimental projects into routine healthcare also raises questions around clinical evidence, regulation, patient safety, data governance and how responsibility should be managed when technology contributes to healthcare decisions.
The focus in Hong Kong was therefore not simply on developing increasingly sophisticated technology, but on creating the partnerships, evidence and investment needed to turn scientific breakthroughs into practical healthcare applications.
As investment in medical AI and other emerging technologies continues to grow, the challenge facing the sector is increasingly shifting from whether new technologies can be developed to whether they can successfully make the much more difficult journey from research into everyday patient care.
