County Durham Approves New Children’s Homes in Lanchester

Plans to create new children’s homes in Lanchester have been approved by Durham County Council, paving the way for additional residential accommodation for vulnerable young people in the county.

The approved development will see existing properties converted into children’s homes providing specialist residential care for children and young people. Planning documents state the homes are intended to offer a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment for children who are unable to live with their families and require residential care.

During the planning process, the council considered issues including the suitability of the location, the impact on neighbouring residents, highway safety and the operational arrangements for the homes before granting permission. Planning officers concluded that the proposals met the relevant planning policies and that any impacts could be appropriately managed through planning conditions.

The approval forms part of wider efforts to increase the availability of children’s residential placements closer to home. Local authorities across England have faced growing demand for specialist children’s care placements, with many councils seeking to expand local provision to reduce the need for children to be placed significant distances from their communities.
