People with personal experience of care services are being encouraged to help shape the quality of care in Scotland by becoming inspection volunteers with the Care Inspectorate.
The opportunity is open to people who have used a care service themselves, as well as those who have cared for someone close to them who has received care.
No formal qualifications are required. Instead, the Care Inspectorate is looking for people who can bring their own lived experience and perspective to its work, helping inspectors understand services through the eyes of the people who rely on them.
Inspection volunteers can contribute their experiences and insights to the inspection process, helping ensure that the voices of people receiving care and their carers are reflected in how services are assessed.
The Care Inspectorate says involving people who use services and carers improves its work and provides an important opportunity for people with direct experience of care to influence how services are scrutinised and improved.
Applications to become an inspection volunteer are currently open, with an online application form available through the Care Inspectorate website.
People who would like more information, require help completing the application form or would prefer to receive a paper application can also contact the Care Inspectorate directly.
The opportunity could particularly appeal to people who want to use their own experiences of health and social care to help improve services for others and ensure the realities of receiving care are represented during inspections.
The Care Inspectorate updated its information about becoming an inspection volunteer on 19 August 2026.
