BMA raises concerns over impact of rural GP practice closures

The British Medical Association (BMA) has raised concerns about the impact of GP practice closures in rural communities, warning that losing local services can place additional pressure on neighbouring practices and create significant challenges for patients trying to access healthcare.

The concerns have been highlighted following closures affecting rural communities, including Reeth Medical Centre in North Yorkshire. In areas where patients may already have to travel considerable distances for healthcare, the loss of a local practice can leave residents facing longer journeys and fewer options for accessing primary care.

Rural communities can face particular difficulties when healthcare services are withdrawn because alternative practices may be located several miles away and public transport can be limited. Older people, patients with long-term health conditions and those without access to a car can be particularly affected when they are required to travel further for routine appointments.

Closures can also have consequences for neighbouring GP practices, which may be required to accommodate additional patients while managing their existing workloads. The BMA’s concerns come amid wider pressures facing general practice, including workforce shortages, rising demand and increasing complexity among patients requiring care.

The issue extends beyond GP capacity, with transport infrastructure playing an important role in whether patients can realistically access alternative services. In densely populated areas, another practice may be relatively close by, but rural geography can mean the closure of even a single healthcare facility has a much wider impact.

The BMA has called attention to the need to protect access to primary care in rural areas and consider the wider consequences when local services are no longer available. Maintaining sustainable healthcare provision in these communities remains an important challenge as the NHS attempts to balance growing demand with workforce and financial pressures.
