Bishop Auckland Hospital Achieves National Surgical Hub Accreditation

Bishop Auckland Hospital has been awarded national accreditation as an NHS surgical hub, recognising its delivery of high standards in planned surgical care.

The accreditation was awarded through NHS England’s Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme, in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of England and supported by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The scheme assesses surgical hubs against nationally recognised clinical and operational standards.

The accreditation recognises the hospital’s role in delivering high-quality elective care, helping patients access common planned procedures such as hip and knee replacements more quickly. Surgical hubs are designed to increase capacity for elective surgery by operating separately from emergency services, allowing dedicated theatres, beds and clinical teams to focus solely on planned operations.

Bishop Auckland Hospital was assessed across a range of standards, including patient pathways, workforce and training, clinical governance, facilities, ring-fenced capacity, utilisation and productivity.

Nationally, NHS surgical hubs are intended to improve productivity, reduce waiting times and lower the risk of last-minute cancellations by protecting planned surgery from the pressures faced by emergency departments. They primarily deliver high-volume, lower-complexity procedures across specialties including orthopaedics, ophthalmology, general surgery, gynaecology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), and urology.

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust said the accreditation reflects the work of its clinical teams and its ongoing commitment to improving patient experience, reducing waiting times and delivering high-quality planned care.
