Birmingham Care Home Upgraded to Outstanding by CQC

A Birmingham care home has been rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with inspectors highlighting its work to promote residents’ independence and its strong links with the local community.

Robert Harvey House in Handsworth Wood has been upgraded from good to outstanding following an inspection carried out in July and August.

The home, which is operated by Broadening Choices For Older People, provides nursing and personal care for people including those living with dementia, physical disabilities and sensory impairments. There were 42 people living at the service when inspectors visited.

CQC rated the home outstanding for both responsiveness and leadership, while its safe, effective and caring services were rated good.

Inspectors found that residents were treated as individuals and that staff understood their personal preferences, needs and what was important to them.

One example highlighted by CQC involved a resident who had required extensive support following a critical illness. Staff worked with the person to rebuild their confidence, independence and mobility, eventually enabling them to move into assisted living – an outcome they had previously thought would not be possible.

Families told inspectors they felt involved in their relatives’ care and were confident that any concerns would be addressed by the management team.

The home was also praised for working with families and other organisations when residents’ circumstances changed, helping people to remain in familiar surroundings where possible rather than facing an unwanted move.

Inspectors highlighted Robert Harvey House’s links with the wider community, including a partnership with a local secondary school which brings young people into the home for regular visits. The initiative aims to tackle loneliness while giving residents opportunities to develop relationships and maintain connections with their community.

The service has also participated in a national care research study, contributing to wider research while giving staff opportunities to develop their own knowledge and skills.

Amanda Lyndon, CQC deputy director of adult social care in the West Midlands, said inspectors had found a warm and welcoming environment where residents’ wishes and wellbeing were central to decision-making.

She also praised the ambition shown by leaders in supporting people to maintain or regain their independence.

Staff described the home as a friendly and collaborative workplace and reported receiving strong support from its registered manager.

CQC also noted that the home holds the highest possible food hygiene rating, with residents speaking positively about the quality and range of meals available.

Following the inspection, Robert Harvey House is now rated outstanding overall.
