Amber heat-health alerts have been issued across most of England as another spell of hot weather raises concerns for vulnerable people and health and social care services.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber alerts for the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England, South East, South West and London.

The alerts will be in place from 9am on Tuesday, 11 August until 9pm on Friday, 14 August. The North East will be under a yellow alert during the same period.

Under the UKHSA system, an amber alert indicates that hot weather is likely to have impacts across health and social care, with the potential for increased deaths among people aged 65 and over and those with health conditions.

The alert also warns that younger age groups could be affected, while increased demand for health and social care services may be seen.

People are being encouraged to take precautions during the hot weather, including staying hydrated, keeping homes as cool as possible and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day.

UKHSA is also urging people to check on older relatives, friends and neighbours, as well as those with existing health conditions who may be particularly vulnerable to high temperatures.

The latest alerts follow repeated periods of unusually hot weather across England this summer, placing renewed focus on the health impacts of prolonged heat.
