Cardiff University Directly Awards £480,000 Student Field Trips Contract

Cardiff University is set to award the Field Studies Council a £480,000 contract to deliver compulsory educational field trips for Year 1 and Year 2 undergraduate students within its School of Engineering.

The three-year contract is expected to run from 14 September 2026 to 13 September 2029 and is valued at £480,000 excluding VAT, or £540,000 including VAT.

Six field trips will be delivered over the contract period, with trips taking place in March or April and June during each of the 2026/27, 2027/28 and 2028/29 academic years.

The contract is being awarded directly to the Field Studies Council under Schedule 5, Regulation 41 of the Procurement Act 2023 as an extension or partial replacement of existing services.

Cardiff University said continuity of provision is required, with no satisfactory alternatives identified. According to the award notice, changing or ending the field trip provision would negatively affect the School of Engineering’s student experience and its capability to teach.

The University said a three-year agreement is required because the field trips are for first and second-year students and the School of Engineering needs to see the cohort through their degrees.
