First Bundibugyo Ebola Vaccine Enters Human Trials

The world’s first vaccine candidate specifically designed to protect against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has entered Phase 1 clinical trials, marking an important milestone as health officials respond to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically for Bundibugyo Ebola. The Phase 1 study will assess the vaccine’s safety and its ability to generate an immune response in healthy volunteers before progressing to larger clinical trials.

The vaccine is one of several candidates being developed through international collaborations involving the University of Oxford, the Serum Institute of India, Moderna and IAVI, with support from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Researchers hope these programmes will help strengthen preparedness for future outbreaks of the Bundibugyo virus.

Experts caution that an approved vaccine is still some time away. Even under accelerated development, clinical trials must demonstrate that the vaccine is both safe and effective before it can be authorised for wider use.

While vaccine research progresses, public health officials stress that rapid case identification, contact tracing, infection prevention and supportive clinical care remain the most effective measures for controlling the current outbreak.
