Heat health alerts have been upgraded across parts of England as forecasters warn the UK is set to experience its fourth heatwave of the year this week.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat-health alerts for parts of eastern and south-eastern England, with yellow alerts covering several other regions. The alerts are designed to warn health and social care services of the increased risks posed by prolonged high temperatures, particularly for older people, those with underlying health conditions and other vulnerable groups.
The Met Office forecasts temperatures could reach 32–33°C across parts of southern England by Wednesday, with some areas expected to meet official heatwave criteria once again after a brief spell of cooler weather.
Health officials are advising care providers, NHS services and the public to take precautions against heat-related illness, including ensuring adequate hydration, keeping indoor environments cool where possible, and checking on people who may be at greater risk during periods of extreme heat.
The renewed period of hot weather comes as many parts of the UK continue to experience exceptionally dry conditions, increasing concerns about wildfire risk and placing additional pressure on health and emergency services.
