Nottingham attacks: NHS trust under corporate manslaughter investigation

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is under investigation for possible corporate manslaughter in connection with its care and treatment of Valdo Calocane before the fatal Nottingham attacks in June 2023.

Northumbria Police, acting on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police, confirmed it has launched the investigation into matters relating to Calocane’s care while he was under the Trust between 2020 and 2022. Calocane, who had a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates on 13 June 2023 before attempting to murder three other people by driving a van into pedestrians.

The investigation will examine whether any organisational failings by the Trust may have contributed to the deaths. A corporate manslaughter investigation does not mean that any criminal offence has been established, and no charges have been brought against the Trust.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said it is cooperating fully with the police investigation and continues to support the independent public inquiry into the attacks.

The announcement marks a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny of the care provided to Calocane before the attacks and comes as the statutory public inquiry continues to examine the circumstances leading up to the events of June 2023.
